A Mask of Religious Practice

An Invitation to Discussion of Catholic Doctrine

As I rise for the opening hymn of the Easter Mass, I can’t help but feel my heart stir, yet at the same moment, I take a quick glance at the man standing beside me, my father, as he struggles to stand up due to the wear and tear on his knees… just the other night, we almost broke out into an argument about attending Mass, and after some reflection I wanted to share some thoughts and see if the internet can do what the internet does best and offer some feedback, especially on hot topics like religion and spiritual practice.

I was born and raised Catholic, but fell out of the faith as I grew older due to disagreement with Church doctrine. Though the term is no longer in vogue, I would most certainly be labeled a Heretic in the eyes of the Church. I am very eclectic in my beliefs and do not see Catholicism, despite quite the historical pedigree, as being the sole provider of Truth with a capital “T”, much less Christianity. Though I do take the phrase from Christianity however, and do my best to pursue “The Good, The True, and The Beautiful” where and when I can.

Yet, for all my disagreements, the Catholic Mass holds exactly these things.
